Migration Today
Swainson's Hawks-86
Turkey Vultures-8
Discussion:
The weather today was cool early (54) with a light breeze from the north. No clouds. By the end of the watch it was 77 degrees. Roost sites were equally divided between some tamarisk west of DiGiorgio Rd and the Date Farm. At 9:10A lift-off from the tamarisk trees began. The hawks flew west, kettled then continued out Coyote Canyon. Shortly after 9:20A Swainson's began to stream out of the Date Farm. Lift today was only available near the mountains. We had a Merlin at the day site.-See Falcon in the tree below.
Evening Watch:
Wind from the south usually brings birds in late. At 6:40P we had a drop in of 33 Swainson's. They descended into the Date Farm.
Prediction:
The wind should be light tomorrow morning. Expect lift-off from 9-9:30A. Best viewing probably from DiGiorgio Rd about 1.4 miles north of Palm Canyon Drive.
Why we have trouble seeing the hawks with the rocky background-3 SW's-3/12/14 |
Not a lot of SW's this evening but fun to watch them drop into the Date Farm-3/12/14 |
Watched as a falcon that landed in a tree-It's silly but fun. |
